Please join the Two Cans for Change campaign and help raise needed non-perishable items for the local food pantries. Pennies has a semi-annual food drive at Shaw's; if you would like to volunteer with the food drives, please contact us at by email at pennies@penniesforpoverty.org. The 2011 Food Drive is currently scheduled for the weekend of March 18th, 19th, and 20th; more details will be posted at a later date.
We are asking that the local religious organizations designate their food pantry collection day as Two Can Sunday. A 2 Can poster is available here.
Other cans and nonperishable drop off locations throughout the month: Salvation Army, Pettengill House, Community Action, and Our Neighbor's Table. Please note The Salvation Army can also take fresh fruit and vegetables.
Belleville Congregational Church
cereal, juice boxes, school snacks, condiments, hygiene items, paper items, peanut butter and jelly, pasta and pasta sauce, canned meats and fruit, soup, powdered milk, macaroni and cheese, dried fruit, rice cakes, bread, crackers.
Community Service, 31 Green St:
Individually wrapped snack foods for school children! Raisins, granola bars, peanut butter crackers, animal crackers etc. Boxed potatoes, boxed meals (Hamburger Helper, Banquets Meals), canned meats, juice, coffee, peanut butter, jelly, canned fruit, cereal, crackers, cookies, rice as well as men's t-shirts, underwear and socks and gas cards.
Has ongoing need: individually wrapped snack foods for school children, nonperishable parmesan cheese, mayo, fragrance-free laundry detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, kleenex, juice concentrate (not frozen): cranberry, apple, grape; fresh fruit, frozen veggies.
A new program, the Common CENTS Garden, encourages farmers and gardeners to grow vegetables for local food pantries. Have a garden? How about planting a row of vegetables for a soup kitchen or food pantry? Download the Common Cents Garden Poster, laminate it and attach it to a stake in your garden. Send us an email and let us know that you are part of the Common Cents Gardens and which food pantry or soup kitchen you are pledging vegetables to. It's that easy!
