"This is the duty of our generation as we enter the twenty-first century—solidarity with the weak, the persecuted, the lonely, the sick, and those in despair. It is expressed by the desire to give a noble and humanizing meaning to a community in which all members will define themselves not by their own identity but by that of others." Elie Weisel
Pennies for Poverty has launched a challenge to all businesses, organizations, schools and neighborhoods in Newburyport to collect 100 cans of non-perishable food by Thanksgiving to donate to the area food pantries. With the economy still on the downside, there are many families and individuals in Newburyport who have fallen below the poverty level or at risk of becoming victims of poverty. We are challenging every one to give a little to make a big impact. If we all donate a can or two, think of all we could feed.
To become a participant sign up by emailing 2can@2cents4change.com. Then go to Downloads on this site to print off your 100 Can Challenge signs for your display and your collection bins and 100 Can Challenge Instructions for food collection and drop off info. It's simple and the impact will be huge.

She is hoping to raise $1000 for our cause so please consider donating to her effort and help us fight poverty in Newburyport. Please click here to learn more and make your donation. Our thanks to Julia!
Recently we recieved a generous gift from the Newburyport Lions Club of $500 which has been added to our 2 Cent Grant Fund. As we rely on donations from individuals, organizations and businesses, we are very appreciative of this generous gift. Our grant funds are given out to address an urgent need in Newburyport, to fund a new initiative that will help to elimintate poverty or the fund an under-funded program that impacts poverty in Newburyport.
Thanks to all who helped us with our fall Food Drive at Shaw's in Newburyport on the weekend of Sept 9-11th. We collected approximately $2820 worth of food to benefit the 5 local food pantries that serve Newburyport residents (Salvation Army, Pennengill House, Our Neighbors Table, Community Action and Community Service. In addition, we raised $657.82 which will be geven equally to the Pennies for Poverty 2 Cent Grant Fund and the Pettengill House. The need in our community is great and we were pleased to assist. We are appreciate all who donated.
Recently, a local Brownie troop showed us all how a few young people could indeed make a difference. The girls of Troop 61368 decided to save their own pennies and individually donate their collections to Pennies for Poverty. They each had a can and filled them twice raising a total of $182. Their leader Jodi Demille has had Fran Larkin, the Pennies for Poverty Awareness chairperson, speak to the girls and they were inspired to personally assist in our effort to address poverty in Newburyport. Thanks girls!

Pennies for Poverty would like to thank all who came by Shaw's Supermarket the weekend of March 18-20 to support our Food Drive. Whether you purchased food to donate or placed money in our collection jugs, you made our event a very successful one. We were able to distribute $2092 worth of food to five area food pantries, Pettengill House, Our Neighbors Table, Salvation Army, Community Action, and Community Service. We collected $1017 in cash donations, half to support both our 2 Cent Grant Fund which gives money to fund local initiatives addressing poverty in Newburyport and the other half to go to the Salvation Army for the purchase of personal care items which are often not covered by public assistance. We appreciate the generosity of our fellow residents and the amazing effort by the employees at Shaw's Supermarket who made this effort possible. If everyone in Newburyport gave 2 cents a day, 2 cans a month and volunteered 2 hours a month it would equal a collective value of 3 MILLION dollars toward assisting those in need.
Pennies for Poverty: 2 Cents 4 Change is pleased to announce that a 2 Cent grant of $3,500 has been awarded to The Newburyport Learning Enrichment Center (NLEC) to set up a Scholarship Fund and Cultural Arts Initiative. This program will offer scholarships for low income children served by NLEC to existing programs in Greater Newburyport as well as fund new after school initiatives. "Part of NLEC's mission is to provide after school activities in the community that will provide stronger links with community partners to help reduce social isolation and boost a sense of belonging to the greater Newburyport community. Without these opportunities most of the at-risk children and families are left without positive choices and low income families are often excluded due to lack of funds" said Nancy Earls, Director of the NLEC.
Pennies is pleased to introduce our newest board member, Michael Gale who will serve as our treasurer. Michael has worked in the healthcare industry for the past 30 years and has been the CFO of Bournewood Health Systems in Brookline MA since 1990. He and his wife, Laura are long time residents of Newburyport and have a son graduating from college in May and a daughter in graduate school. Welcome Michael!
$5,150 spent on website, nonprofit filings, PR material, office supplies, photocopying of Service Directory and other.

How will the unemployment benefit extension bill not passing affect our community? Nationally of the 8.5 million receiving benefits, 2 million people stand to lose unemployment by Christmas. In Mass, 50-60,000 people will have their unemployment stopped by Christmas with an additional 6-7,000 per week thereafter. Pennies has not been able to pin down how many by town but with the service agencies already struggling to meet the need, they will certainly have difficulty meeting this new increase in people needing help.
What can we do? Pennies would like to challenge the community to come up with ideas on what we can do—in the immediate future as well as long-term to increase food donations, monetary donations as well as address the projected increase in volunteer needs down the road. So, everyone please put your creative thinking caps on and let's come up with some ideas. I know we are all busy with the holidays but being prepared is half the battle. Please send your ideas to 2c4c@2cents4change.com.
THANK YOU!
The food drive collected $2,300 worth of food which will be distributed equally to Community Action, Community Service, Our Neighbor's Table, Pettengill House and The Salvation Army. In addition, $935.72 was donated to the 2 Cent Grant Fund and the Community Need Grant.
The Community Need Grant, 1/2 of the monetary donations from the food drive, $465.81, has been awarded to His Provisions Too, a new soup kitchen in Amesbury serving breakfast from 9:30-11AM at All Saints, 67 Friend St., Amesbury.

Recent articles point out a very disturbing trend. Poverty in the United States is getting worse. The recent economic troubles and recession have certainly contributed to that. One in 7 Americans lives in poverty. 1 in 5 children do. Nearly 12 million households receive food stamps, a record. A record number of Americans signed up for Medicaid last year as the recession wiped out their jobs and health insurance. The number of poor people in the suburbs has increased 37% in the last decade. Hundreds of thousands of pets are being abandoned or left with shelters.
Locally, families who donated to food pantries a few years ago are standing in line this year. Another soup kitchen recently opened in Amesbury. That brings the total to 7 in the area along with 5 food pantries. Some of the stories are just heartbreaking. Last year one mother stood in line for 3 hours at one of the local food pantries. All she wanted was toilet paper! And when she got to the end of the line, they were all out!
Many of us want to help. We are a kind, compassionate and giving nation. There are a few things we can do to help those in need in our community and it doesn't take much. Do you realize that if everyone in Newburyport just gave 2 Cents a day, that's over $100,000 a year!! If we all donated just 2 Cans a month to a food pantry that's 36,000 cans of food a year, and if we donated just 2 Hours of our time each month, that's 36,000 hours a year of volunteering. And if we do this, then Together we will make the Newburyport area a better place.
I am a volunteer Board Member of Pennies for Poverty: 2 Cents 4 Change and this is what we believe in! Imagine if we did this in all 300 towns and cities in Massachusetts? I am available to work with any other towns to implement this and give talks to any community groups. Together we can all do something to "make gentle the life of this world."

Please we need your help! The food drives have been running low on food as well as personal care items during the summer. The winter months increases the demand. Please help us refill the food pantries. Even one can of food can make a difference. With about 17,500 Newburyport residents, if everyone in Newburyport donated one item, there would be 17,500 items of food for the food pantries to give out!
We can't do this without you.
